Sperm Count Testing
What is a Sperm Count Test?
A sperm count test is when the number of sperm in your ejaculate is evaluated. Greater than 15 million sperm per milliliter is considered normal.
When the concentration of sperm is low (referred to as oligozoospermia), the chance that the sperm will reach an egg in the woman’s fallopian tubes is greatly reduced. When there is a complete absence of sperm (“no sperm count”), this is known as azoospermia.
Factors That Can Impact Sperm Count
A variety of lifestyle, medical and environmental factors can impact sperm count, which can include but are not limited to:
- Alcohol use
- Drug use
- Smoking tobacco
- Weight/obesity
- Genetic conditions (e.g. Klinefelter syndrome)
- Cancer treatment
- Varicocele
- Hormone imbalance
- Surgeries and/or medical procedures
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
